Introduction to Connecticut News Media

Connecticut is the state in the southernmost region of the northeastern United States that is bordered by Rhode Island to the east, Massachusetts to the north, New York to the west, and Long Island Sound to the south. Though Connecticut is the third smallest state by area, it is the 29th most populous state. Due to its high population density and high per-capita income, Connecticut is a significant market for the many newspapers and news websites.

Introduction to Connecticut Newspapers

Interestingly, the history of press & newspapers in Connecticut is older than the country itself. The first press to function in the region was in 1639, and it was based in the erstwhile Massachusetts Bay colony. It was Stephen Day and his son Matthew who owned the press.

By the end of the 1940s, Samuel Green bought the press and ran it for several years. It was his descendants who later helped found the early newspapers in Connecticut.

Early newspapers in Connecticut

The first newspaper to be published in the Connecticut region was the Connecticut Gazette and was founded on April 12, 1755 (Approximately 33 years before Connecticut was declared a state). Connecticut Gazette was owned by James Parker & Benjamin Franklin and was published at Thomas Green’s press.

By 1760, James Parker & Benjamin Franklin transferred the management of the Connecticut Gazette to Thomas Green. Due to the French-Indian war, the publishing of the newspaper had to be suspended in 1764. The paper resumed its operations in 1765 under Benjamin Mecom, but it was short-lived. Because of dwindling circulation and a significant decline in revenue, the newspaper ceased its operations in February 1768.

As said earlier, it was the Green family’s descendants that founded most of the newspapers in the region. The second newspaper in the region New London Summary, was founded by Timothy Green in August 1758. New London Summary was a weekly journal and primarily focused on covering the French-Indian war. This newspaper, too was short-lived and had to be withdrawn from circulation in 1763 following the death of Timothy Green.

In the year 1764, Thomas Green founded the Connecticut Courant (Hartford), which later became the oldest newspaper in continuous publication in the country. Connecticut Courant was initially launched as a weekly and was published on Mondays.

Eventually, Green sold Connecticut Courant to his assistant Ebenezer Watson. In those days, the primary issue faced by the paper was the shortage of paper for printing. Ebenezer Watson was quick to set up a paper mill to address the lack of printing paper.

Role of newspapers in Connecticut’s history

Connecticut Courant had played a commendable role in the history of Connecticut. The newspaper was successful in keeping its readers updated on the events that were transcribing during that period.

Apart from being the oldest & popular newspaper in the country, Connecticut Courant was one among the few papers in the era to have a woman as the chief editor. Following the demise of Ebenezer Watson in 1777, his widow, Hannah Bunce Watson, took control of the paper. Making her one of the first female publishers in America.

The years following 1800 witnessed a lot of new newspapers entering circulation in Connecticut. By the beginning of the 20th century, there were around 100 newspapers in Connecticut. With each significant city having two to three papers. Over the years, most of these newspapers merged to form conglomerates.

As of 2020, there are more than 150 newspapers & news websites in Connecticut. In this article, we will look at some of the top newspapers & news websites in Connecticut.

History

The history of The Hartford Courant dates back to 1764 when Thomas Green founded it. Initially, it was named The Connecticut Courant, and it was a weekly newspaper that was published on Mondays. The Connecticut Courant was the first newspaper in the country to generate revenue from advertisements.

Within a few years, after the paper was launched, Thomas Green sold the newspaper to Ebenezer Watson. Ebenezer was a visionary, and the paper thrived under his leadership until he died in 1977. Following which his widow, Hannah Bunce Watson, assumed control. Conclusion

The state of Connecticut has a crucial place in the media history of the United States. The Hartford Courant, the largest daily newspaper in Connecticut which was founded before the country’s independence, remains the country’s oldest newspaper in continuous publication. But that doesn’t make Connecticut a place where newspapers are thriving. Like other states & countries, the newspaper industry in Connecticut is facing a drop in revenue due to dwindling circulation.

The situation was further aggravated when the Covid19 Pandemic hit the US. Most newspaper who were already struggling to keep their business afloat was severely affected by the pandemic. Due to this, many newspapers had to temporarily suspend their printed edition while some had to permanently shut down their business.

As per the research conducted by the University of North Carolina, it is estimated that almost 2,000 local newspapers had to wind up their business due to significant decline in revenue.

For instance, The Newtown Bee newspaper, that was established in 1877 ceased their printed edition and completely shifted to digital publications. Similarly, The Hartford Business Journal too went all digital owing to a decline in revenue. Whereas, some newspapers such as The Day of New London have opened a portal to accept tax-deductible donations.
