Florida newspapers and Florida newspaper list

Florida is a US state in the southeastern part of the country with an estimated population of over 21 million. Florida shares its borders with the Gulf of Mexico, Georgia, Alabama, Straits of Florida and the Atlantic Ocean. Almost 6.2 million people in Florida live in Miami. Tampa Bay, Jacksonville and Orlando are other cities that are home to the urban population of Florida.

History of Florida Newspapers

Having established St. Augustine in 1565, Florida welcomed its first newspaper after 200 years. Under Spanish rule in 1783, William Charles Wells started Florida’s first newspaper, East Florida Gazette. The first issue of the newspaper was published on February 1 but no known copies are found in America today. However, some of the copies of the East Florida Gazette are preserved in London.

Spain ceded Florida to the United States in 1821, after which a printer from Augusta, Richard Edes, arrived in St. Augustine to launch the Florida Gazette. Edes died after three months and the newspaper’s name was changed to East Florida Herald, which was published for many years. In the same year, two Virginians arrived in Pensacola to start publishing the Floridian on August 18, 1821. However, the title of the newspaper was later changed to Pensacola Gazette and West Florida Advertiser.

Now that we’ve discussed the history of the newspaper in Florida, let’s have a look at the top newspapers & news websites in the state.

Conclusion

The newspapers and news websites mentioned in this article are not the entire list of the ones that are currently published in Florida. Instead, they are the top ones that are circulated in the state. Out of this list, the Tampa Bay Times with a daily circulation of 240,024 & 403,229 copies on Sundays is the top newspaper by circulation & Collier Citizen is the smallest.

Though Florida being the third populous state in the country with a population of over 21 million, the newspaper industry in Florida is struggling to stay afloat. In fact, in a report published by Florida Bulldog on the circulation of newspapers in Florida, it was identified that the circulation of newspapers in Florida is declining at a faster rate than the national average. The circulation of seven major newspapers in the state including Bradenton Herald, El Nuevo Herald, Florida Times-Union, Ocala Star-Banner, Orlando Sentinel, & Herald-Tribune had a decline of more than 27%.

The condition of the newspapers in Florida was grim even before the Covid-19 pandemic which was primarily caused by better internet penetration & gaining popularity of digital methods of consuming news. The industry which was already struggling to stay afloat took a serious blow when the pandemic struck the country.

In a desperate effort to keep the business up & running, some of the major newspapers in the state underwent mergers while the lesser fortunate local dailies & weeklies were forced to withdraw from circulation. Apart from these, there are some others like the New Times Broward-Palm Beach that ceased their printed circulation and switched to being a digital-only publication.

While the Media industry knows no bounds, we at MediaBuzz are working hard to provide comprehensive coverage of all the news sources in America. We are a team of professional writers with a close eye for the updates happening in the world of journalism.
