Introduction to Atlanta News Media

Atlanta is the capital as well as the largest city of Georgia, a state of the United States. According to the United States Census Bureau, the population of the city was estimated at 506,811 in 2019. More than six million people, half of the entire state population, are based in Atlanta. Geographically, Atlanta is situated at the foothills of the picturesque Appalachian Mountains.

Media in Atlanta

Television is the primary source of news for the residents of Atlanta. WXIA-TV 11 (NBC), WSB-TV 2 (ABC), WGCL-TV 46 (CBS) and WAGA-TV 5 (Fox) are among the city’s most prominent TV networks. WPXA-TV 14 (Ion), WUVG-TV 34 (Univision), WPCH-TV 17 (Ind.), WUPA 69 (CW) and WATL 36 (MyNetworkTV) are among the other commercial channels available in Atlanta.

Two public television networks operate in Atlanta besides as many radio stations. WGTV 8 is the main station of the Georgia Public Television network, which is available across the state. Georgia Public Radio is funded by listeners from within the state. While WABE is owned by Atlanta Public Schools, jazz music station WCLK is owned by Clark Atlanta University.

History of Atlanta Newspapers

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is the most read newspaper in the city. In 1950, two of the city’s most popular newspapers — The Atlanta Journal and The Atlanta Constitution — merged into The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. In 1982, the staff of the two newspapers was consolidated and separate publications for morning and afternoon — Constitution and Journal respectively — were ceased in 2001.

Creative Loafing is among the alternative weekly newspapers of Atlanta. The weekly newspaper has an average circulation of 80,000. The city has a popular monthly general-interest titled the ‘Atlanta magazine’ as well. It has won several awards for covering all news related to Atlanta.
