History of Wyoming Newspapers

The first newspaper of Wyoming was The Leader that started publishing on September 19, 1867. Nathan Baker and J.E. Gates were the founders of The Leader. Baker was earlier working at the Rocky Mountain Herald and the Rocky Mountain News in Colorado.

Besides Leader, Baker established two other newspapers in Wyoming — the Laramie Sentinel on May 1, 1869, and the South Pass News.

Other Early Newspapers in Wyoming

The Daily Argus and The Star were two other prominent newspapers that started publishing in Cheyenne in 1867. None of the two newspapers could last for more than two years. In February 1868, Sweetwater Miner came into existence. It was a newspaper for news related to immigration.

Boomerang was another popular newspaper that started its publication in Wyoming. Bill Nye, who established the newspaper on March 11, 1881, in Laramie, had turned one of the best-known humourists of the US by the time he retired from Boomerang.

Conclusion

The previously mentioned newspapers & News websites are the prominent ones that are currently in circulation in Wyoming.  As of 2020, there are about 70 newspapers & news websites in Wyoming and Casper Star Tribune is the top newspaper in terms of circulation while, Northern Wyoming Daily News is the lowest.

Though, Wyoming is a state with a rich media history, the newspapers in Wyoming are struggling to stay afloat. Like the other newspapers across the country and the globe, Wyoming newspapers are facing a steep decline in revenue from circulation and advertisements.

The industry which was already limping took another blow with the Covid-19 pandemic grappling USA. With local businesses shut, the revenue from advertisements dropped to nil for most of the newspapers!

While the lesser fortunate newspapers in Wyoming like the Glenrock Independent had to cease their print operation and shift to online publication.  Whereas, newspapers like The Wyoming Tribune-Eagle, The Laramie Boomerang, The Riverton Ranger, & The Gillette News-Record had to cut down on their print schedule.

While the Media industry knows no bounds, we at MediaBuzz are working hard to provide comprehensive coverage of all the news sources. We are a team of professional writers with a knack for the trends in the world of journalism.

We can do a lot more with your support!
