Introduction to Vietnam News Media

Media in Vietnam is mostly influenced by the Communist Party. All the print and broadcast media outlets are controlled by the government. According to the United States-based Freedom House, print journalists as well as bloggers struggle due to repressive laws. The working journalists have also faced physical attack and intimidation in case of reporting on controversial issues.

Press Freedom

While print journalists are bound by repressive laws, bloggers as well as citizen journalists act as independent news source for public. However, the Reporters Without Borders (RSF) claims that the country has “ever-harsher forms of persecution” for those who criticise the government.

Leading Media

Television is the primary source of news for the Vietnamese population. Only national television networks operate on the Vietnam Television (VTV), which owns a satellite and cable pay TV network. Some of the foreign TV networks are also available on VTV. As far as radio network is concerned, the Voice of Vietnam (VoV) leads the industry with VoV 5 that broadcasts in English and other languages.

Print Media

Vietnam has hundreds of newspapers and magazines, though all of them are controlled by the Communist Party. Some of the publications are owned by the government bodies while others come under the ownership of the military, claims Freedom House.

Internet Media

The web media is developing with time in Vietnam. According to the Internet World Stats, as many as 68.5 million people had access to the internet in Vietnam by 2018. Even though there are more news websites than newspapers in Vietnam, the ruling government does not take much time to block the content that poses a threat to the Communist rule.

In 2018, Freedom House said that the Vietnamese government has a system in place for censorship. With social media giant Facebook, the government had removed hundreds of accounts for spreading “reactionary, anti-Party” content on the internet.

Conclusion

The government in Vietnam is using the print media to inform the public about various policies. Thanks to that, numbers of newspapers and magazines doubled since 1996. State control over media is not new in Vietnam. In the last days of the French colonialism, the authorities arrested reporters and forced many of the media outlets to shut down.

After the First Indochina War, Hanoi became the hub of print media outlets, all of which are now owned and controlled by the Communist Party.

Prominent Media

Tuoi Tre, Ng??i Lao ??ng, Thanh Nien, Tien Phong, Hàn?im?i and Sai Gon Giai Phong are among the most prominent Vietnamese newspapers in the current times. Saigon Eco is the leading French language newspaper that is available in Vietnam.

State of New Media

Like many other countries, Vietnam is also witnessing a surge in the news websites on each passing day. Zing.vn, VietNamNet, VnExpress, Thanh Niên, Tu?i Tr?, Dân Trí, VietnamPlus and VTC News are among the most visited websites in Vietnam. Báo M?i is Vietnam’s largest online news aggregator.

In 2019, the Vietnamese government passed a cyber security law making it mandatory for the global online portals to set up their local offices in Vietnam.
