Introduction to New Jersey News Media

New Jersey is a state in the Northeastern United States bordered by New York, Delaware & Pennsylvania. It was one of the 13 original states and is known for its diverse history.

New Jersey is the fourth smallest state in terms of area and the 11th most populous state. As of 2019, the state is estimated to have a population of 8,882,190 and hence it is a significant market for newspapers & news websites.

History of Press in New Jersey

The history of newspapers & press in New Jersey can be traced back to a period before the state was officially annexed to the union on December 18th, 1787. Though James Parker set up the first press in New Jersey in the 1750s, printed materials were circulated in the colony as early as 1723.

During the colonial era, New Jersey was wedged between the colonial cities of New York and Philadelphia. Both these cities had established printers and presses, and there was little interest among people to set up a press in New Jersey.

First Press in New Jersey

The first press in New Jersey was set up in 1758 in the town of Burlington by James Parker. James Parker was born in Woodbridge Township, New Jersey, in 1714 and later relocated to Philadelphia and started working with Benjamin Franklin as a journeyman.

Benjamin Franklin was quick to understand James Parker’s talent, and he silently financed parker to set up his own printing business in New York City in 1741. Parker set up the newspapers New-York Gazette and Weekly Post-Boy, which quickly gained popularity, and he became the official printer for both the King of England and the government of New York province.

Following the success of his first venture, James Parker moved to his home town in New Jersey, in Burlington, and set up a press. It is from this press; parker published The New American Magazine.

First Newspaper in New Jersey – The Plain Dealer

Though James Parker set up the first press in New Jersey, it was Ebenezer Elmer, who established the first newspaper in New Jersey. It was titled The Plain Dealer, and it first hit the newsstands on December 25th, 1775.

It was a weekly newspaper that was published on Tuesdays with a focus on supporting the drive for American liberty. Like all early newspapers, The Plain Dealer was short-lived, and it was withdrawn from circulation in February 1776.

First successful newspaper in New Jersey – The New Jersey Gazette

While The Plain Dealer is credited as the first newspaper in New Jersey, it wasn’t successful like most early newspapers. The first successful newspaper in New Jersey was The New Jersey Gazette, published by Isaac Collins.

The New Jersey Gazette was initially published from Burlington, and it first hit the newsstands on December 5th, 1777. It later relocated to the capital city of Trenton in March 1778, where it remained in circulation until 1786.

By the time New Jersey was annexed to the union in 1787, there were around seven newspapers that were published in New Jersey. They were

  1. Agricultural and political intelligencer: April 13th, 1790 – December 13th, 1791
  2. Plain dealer: December 25th, 1775 – February 12th, 1776
  3. The New-Jersey Gazette: December 5th, 1777 – March 4th, 1778
  4. The New-Jersey Journal: February 16th, 1779 – November 12th 1783
  5. The New-Jersey Journal: June 13th, 1792 – December 30th, 1800
  6. Political intelligencer: October 14th, 1783 – May 3rd, 1786
  7. The New-Jersey gazette:March 4th,1778 – November 27th,1786

Conclusion

Newspapers have always been a critical part of New Jersey’s news landscape. It being a state without an independent TV station, the newspapers have always played a commendable role in holding powerful institutions and people accountable.

Like the other countries around the globe and the other US states, the newspaper industry in New Jersey is struggling. It is estimated that there has been an 8% decline in daily circulation of newspapers from 2017 to 2018 and 12% from 2018 to 2019 in the state.

The already limping print media industry in New Jersey took another severe blow when the COVID-19 pandemic hit the state. Revenue from advertisements plunged almost to a null, which forced newsrooms in New Jersey to cut many jobs.

While some of the major newspapers in New Jersey resorted to reducing their publication schedule, some shifted to digital mediums in a desperate effort to keep their businesses afloat. The lesser fortunate local dailies and weeklies were either forced to shut down or merge with others.

While the Media industry knows no bounds, we at MediaBuzz are working hard to provide comprehensive coverage of all the news sources in America. We are a team of professional writers with a close eye on the updates happening in the world of journalism.
