Introduction to Egyptian News Media

Egypt has the strongest media network in the Middle East with newspapers being the most influential and widely trusted medium of news. The television and film industry of the nation is also quite popular in the world as it produces most of the Arab-speaking shows from its Media Production City.

The government controls most of the TV channels, radio stations, newspapers, websites and magazines. The state is trying to take control of the social media platforms as well besides the traditional media platforms in the current times.

Power Reduction

Some of the Egyptian news channels used to broadcast talk shows with heated political debates but they have started to disappear now. False news is widely being spread to clamp down on the activists using social media.

Press Safety

According to Reporters Without Borders, Egypt has “one of the world’s biggest prisons” for journalists.

“The authorities have waged a witch-hunt since 2013 against journalists suspected of supporting the Muslim Brotherhood,” the organisation states further.

Electronic Media

While newspaper remains to be the most trusted medium of news in Egypt, television is the most popular medium. The government owns and manages two national TV networks and six popular regional channels.

In the post-Mubarak era, many of the private investors entered the electronic media market of Egypt. The country also boasts of satellite TV as it was the first Arab nation to own a satellite called Nilesat. Arab pay TV networks have their offices at the Media Production City in Cairo.

Print Media

Over 20 daily newspapers publish in Egypt, though there are not much readers for the same as most of them now prefer reading news online. Conclusion

The Egyptian media influences the majority of population in Egypt and the Arab World. However, the media professionals are not much safe in the country. According to Reporters Without Borders, “successive governments have tried to control the media and have not hesitated to impose measures restricting journalists’ freedom”.

“The situation of media freedom in Egypt is extremely worrying” the organisation stated further.

Pro-Islamist Media

Even though the pro-Islamist media of Egypt is allowed to broadcast from abroad, the journalists can only report as per the official statement of the terror outfits on terrorist attacks. In August 2015, the government had introduced a terrorism law to ensure that the journalists and human rights activists are not allowed to enter the parts of Sinai region.

Online Media

While traditional media is completely controlled by the ruling government in Egypt, some critics of the state find their voices on various social media platforms. Facebook is the most popular social media site in the country with more that 34.5 million accounts registered by 2017.

President al-Sisi’s government is taking measures to control the media on the internet. The government has banned over hundreds websites and arrested the online activists. The government had introduced a cyber-law in 2018 that allows the authorities to block any website without prior notice.
