Introduction to Bangladesh News Media

Though Bangladesh as a country came into existence in the year 1971, the cultural and linguistic roots of the country date back to the 7th century AD. Before we delve into the history of print media in Bangladesh let’s have a sneak peek into the history of the region for a better understanding of the same.

Bangladesh as a country we see today was formed after a series of partitions that happened during 1905 & 1947. These partitions divided the Bengal region into East & West Bengal in the beginning and eventually into East Pakistan and India in 1947.

Speaking of the history of print media in Bangladesh, it can be traced back to the Bengal Presidency in the pre-independence India which covered the West Bengal, Parts of Orissa & Assam under the British East India Company. Calcutta which was the capital of the Bengal Presidency during the pre-independence era became the hub of newspapers & Magazines.

The Bengali newspaper Samachar Darpan, which was first published in the year 1818 marked the beginning of the era of Bengali Journalism. Samachar Darpan was started by missionaries Carey & Marshman. This newspaper covered both national & international news & had separate columns for news in Bengali & English languages. Samachar Darpan remained in circulation until it was closed in 1852. Digdarshan (1818), Samba Kaumadi (1821), Sambad Pravakar (1839) were the other prominent Bengali publications of that time.

The second important place in the press map of the region after Calcutta was Dhaka. Dhaka, the capital of the present day Bangladesh is the place that holds the key to the media history of present day Bangladesh.  Kabita Kushumabati & Dhaka Prakash were two prominent Bengali newspapers that were published from Dhaka during the 1860s. It is important to note that the newspaper Amrit Bazar Patrika which gained a lot of momentum in the Indian subcontinent was first published in Dhaka during 1868.

After the partition of 1947, Bengali newspapers & magazines which had large readership began to split and resulted in the formation of new publishing companies and newspapers. In the subsequent years after 1947, two new dailies entered circulation in East Pakistan namely Purba Pakistan & Paigam. Similarly, the following years saw the major newspapers Azad & Morning news that were in circulation in Calcutta since 1936 & 1942 shifting to Dhaka.

In the years 1950 & 1955 two more Bengali dailies viz; The Sangbad and The Ittefaq entered circulation. These two newspapers eventually grew up to be the important newspapers in Bangladesh. It was during this era the first English daily of, The Pakistan Observer entered circulation in 1948.

After the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971, with the formulation of Bangladesh, newspapers & magazines such as Banglar Bani, Janapada, Bangabarta, Andolan, People’s View, Dainik, and a lot more newspapers began entering circulation.

Another important aspect about the media scene in Bangladesh is the fact that the country is divided into 8 provinces. And these provinces have a substantial number of newspapers in circulation there. For instance, the capital city of Dhaka is the home for 21 newspapers among which four are estimated to have a circulation of more than 100,000 copies.

The newspaper business is mainly owned by Private companies & Limited liability companies in Bangladesh. Except for the four daily newspapers and one periodical namely, Morning news, Azad, Observer, Dainik Bangla & Purbodesh. These newspapers are owned by the government.

C. English Newspapers in Bangladesh

Bangladesh is a country that has faced hegemonies and the crude effects of imperialism for a long period of time. The country has a history of Native language movement which makes Bangladeshis hard-core language patriots. Which makes Bangladesh largely a monolingual country with English used only for academic & professional purposes.

Bangladesh as a country started embracing English only after the onset of globalization. It was done to ensure that they don’t fail to reap the benefits of globalization due to their monolingual policy. This paradigm shift actually gave English an unusual position in the Language scene of Bangladesh. Owing to these reasons, English newspapers are mainly read among the educated urban readers even today.

In a country where Bangla is still the mother tongue of 98% of the population, it is quite interesting to see that there are 32 English newspapers in circulation. Among these 32 not every newspaper is regularly published and most of the regularly published English papers in Bangladesh have very less circulation.

The capital city of Dhaka is where English papers have the most circulation. It is estimated that the circulation of all the English newspapers combined is only around 70,000 copies. In this 70,000 copies, 77% of this circulation is accounted by one newspaper, ‘The daily star’.

In this section we will have a look at the English newspapers that are in circulation in Bangladesh.

Daily Star

Bangladesh Newspapers 67 Daily star

Daily star is one of the widely circulated English newspapers in Bangladesh. The newspaper first entered circulation on 14th January, 1991 and was founded by Syed Mohammad Ali. Daily star came into existence in an era where the autocratic regime in Bangladesh fell & a democratic system of governance was on the rise. This paved way for the freedom of press and there was a huge demand for newspapers. Owing to this, daily star was founded with the motto ‘Committed to people’s right to know’.

Since the inception of the Daily star, it has had a neutral political stance and has stayed away from being influenced by political parties or other vested groups. Daily star is known among its readers for the strong stance in most of the socio-political issues in Bangladesh.

Apart from these, Daily star is widely applauded for their relentless work to ensure human rights to all, remove gender discrimination, freedom of press, accountability in administration & to uphold national interests. The newspaper has separate columns for articles & essays written by staff, reports & editors on these issues and is published regularly.

Daily star apart from being a source for reliable & authentic news, is also credited with conducting competitions & seminars for the school & college students with a focus on promoting young talents.

The newspaper covers all facets of national & international news. Their national news bureaus are located at Dhaka & Chittagong and they have several representatives working abroad. Apart from the newspaper, Daily star publishes several magazines such as

Conclusion

Newspapers have played a crucial role throughout the history of Bangladesh starting from the pre-independence era. It was the newspapers in Bangladesh that fuelled the events which eventually led to the Bengali Language movement & the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971. The role played by these newspapers will always remain in the history of print media across the globe. Since the pre-independence era, newspapers have been popular in Bangladesh. In fact, at one point in the 1990s, the oldest newspaper in Bangladesh, Daily Ittefaq had a circulation of a whopping 450,000 copies.

Things started taking a U-turn with the onset of the 21st century. With the wake of digital revolution, TV News channels slowly began to replace the print media & radio. It didn’t take these TV news channels much time to dominate the media scene across the globe. This in turn had an adverse effect over the global newspaper publishing industry.

The media scene in Bangladesh was not much different from that across the globe. The wake of 21st century saw the internet revolution in Bangladesh progressing in its full swing. But it is interesting to note that, unlike Europe & America where the internet revolution pushed many most of the newspaper publishers to the verge of bankruptcy Internet couldn’t really shake the foundation of the newspaper industry in Bangladesh.

Even now when compared to other countries the newspaper industry in Bangladesh isn’t as effected as most other countries. Yeah, it is true that most of the leading dailies of Bangladesh who had their circulation in lakhs has now dropped to thousands. That being said, there are a lot of small time newspapers who have adapted themselves to the digital revolution. These newspapers are reporting a considerable number of circulation.

Most of the publishing companies in Bangladesh are currently giving immense importance to their digital footprint. Almost all of the newspapers in Bangladesh at present do have e-papers, an online news portal & mobile apps.

Compared to other countries where the onset of digital revolution has weakened the print press, the print media in Bangladesh still remains influential. There are still a large share of people living in the Urban & Rural areas who still depends on newspapers & read them regularly. It is interesting to note that though the circulation of newspapers has reduced drastically over the past 10 years, the print industry still survives.

It is true that the Bangladesh print media industry is running out of steam and the industry experts predict that it would survive for a maximum of 2 more decades!
