Introduction to Arizona News Media

Arizona is a state in the Southwestern region of the United States and is the 6th largest and the 14th most populous state in the country. Historically Arizona was part of the Viceroyalty of New Spain and became part of Mexico in 1821. It was in the year 1848, Arizona became part of the United States following the Mexican–American War. Arizona is the 48th state and the final one to be admitted to the Union and it was awarded statehood on February 14, 1912.

The history of the printed media in Arizona dates back to 1859 when the first press in present-day Arizona was opened in Tubac. This printing press was brought down to Tubac from a manufacturer in Cincinnati, Ohio. It was in this press, the first newspaper of Arizona, The Arizonian was published.

The Arizonian newspaper was launched in the year 1859 as a weekly newspaper when Arizona was just a territory of the United States and not a state. It was also the time when people were moving into the newly acquired regions from the different parts of the country.

This newspaper was founded by the Santa Rita Mining Company with a focus on promoting the regional resources of Arizona to attract miners from across the country and to secure a separate government for Arizona. The newspaper was initially published from Tubac and was later relocated to Tucson. The Arizonian was successful in gaining popularity within a short period. But owing to the civil war that broke out, the newspaper had to cease its publication in 1871.

As of 2020, there are in excess of 55 printed newspapers in Arizona and many online newspapers. In this article, we will have a look at the top newspapers and news websites in Arizona.
